Remington's breakout painting, showing eight cowboys and a pack horse in full gallop, fleeing a pursuing party of Apache warriors near the Mexican border. Painted after Remington's own trips covering the U.S. Cavalry's pursuit of Geronimo; the scene is a dramatized composite rather than a documented event. First shown at the National Academy of Design in 1890 and now in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.
